About IWG

Advocating Justice, Accountability, and a Just Transition

The International Working Group on Petroleum Pollution and Just Transition in the Niger Delta (IWG) was established after the Bayelsa State Oil and Environmental Commission’s landmark report An Environmental Genocide. The report exposed the scale of oil pollution in Bayelsa and across the Niger Delta, and called for urgent action to hold International Oil Companies (IOCs) accountable.

The IWG amplifies community voices, supports Nigerian stakeholders, and builds international pressure to deliver clean-up, compensation, and reparative justice. By reframing divestment as a true just transition, we place environmental justice, biodiversity restoration, and community survival at the centre of global climate debates.
